City hopes to bring an Alberta Football League franchise to Airdrie

The Airdrie Highlanders were the first senior men’s rugby team in the city, and now the the Airdrie Irish Football Club is looking to follow in the Highlanders foot steps. The Club is sending an application to the Alberta Football League to place a senior men’s football franchise in the city of Airdrie.

The Airdrie Irish Football Club is in the process of sending a proposal to the AFL, after city council approved a letter of support for the team Monday.

If the league approves an Airdrie franchise, it will be the 9th team in the AFL and will compete against teams from across the province. Teams range all the way from Fort McMurray and Grand Prairie in the north to Red Deer and Calgary in the south.
