Prior to officially kicking off its inaugural Alberta Football League (AFL) season, the Airdrie Irish senior men’s team hopes to offset team costs by hosting a Spring Silent Auction at the Grey Eagle Resort & Casino in Calgary on March 20.
“It’s a very exciting time,” said Airdrie Irish President Matt Squires. “We hope to attract as many football fans as possible to the event.”
Those attending the auction will have an opportunity to bid on such items as a signed Calgary Stampeders football helmet, a signed Calgary Flames hockey stick and print, and an Edmonton Eskimos signed football.
“We have received amazing support from various organizations and companies throughout the province,” said Squires.
“I think people that come out are going to be pretty amazed at the items we have available.”
Tickets for the auction, which takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., cost $25, which includes food, live entertainment, door prizes and a special keynote speaker (to be confirmed).
A portion of the proceeds from the event, which the Irish have hopes of raising upwards of $10,000, will go towards the Airdrie Football Society.
A non-for-profit semi-pro league which allows players to continue playing football following their high school, university and professional careers, the AFL is comprised of organizations in St. Albert, Edmonton, Lloydminster, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Red Deer and Calgary.
When it comes to the on-field product, the Irish roster is beginning to take shape, according to Squires, with approximately 50 players aged 18 to 43 registered and raring to go.
“The team is looking great,” said Squires.
“We’re still recruiting players, but we expect to have the best roster we can possibly field by the time the season starts.”
The Irish makes its AFL debut on the road against the Calgary Gators at Shouldice Athletic Park on June 6, before hosting the Grande Prairie Drillers for its home opener at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park on June 13.
