Things are about to get a little more football in Airdrie with the announcement of a new semi pro team kicking off this spring to play in the Alberta Football League.
President Matt Squires means semi professional means that many of the players are CFL, University football, and high school football alumni. It’s considered semi professional because they do seek sponsorships.
“There’s people like myself that have played University of Calgary football, I have friends that have played with the BC Lions, the Calgary Stampeders, the Edmonton Eskimos, so its a mix of talent from all over.”
Squires says a recent study find football is the eleventh most popular sport in Alberta, and a small municipality like Airdrie will help them embrace the entertaining aspect of sports.
They hope to play fast paced fun Saturday night games with halftime entertainment.
Long term plans include a bid for a new stadium in Airdrie, but home games for now will play at Genesis Field.
They accept a variety of players from recent high school grads to CFL alumni.
Their next step is seeking sponsors and players.
A new player registration night/meet and greet for potential fans is slated for the night of October 23 at the Toad and Turtle.
