After more than six months of planning and preparing the Airdrie Irish Football Club has been officially accepted into the Alberta Football League.

Starting in 2015 they are on the schedule for the regular season. But there is still much to do.

President Matt Squires says official approval was just a step in the process.

“Moving on from that we’ll obviously have to get everything organized, get ready for the season, get our fields booked. Just a finalization of the jerseys. More player recruitment, which is a big thing for us being a men’s league everybody has considerations with their families and their job so obviously we want to look for a few more players. Keep looking for sponsors that’s a big thing for us. And also we are going to start our off-season training really shortly.”

The first regular season game will sort of be baptism by fire for the team. June 6th they play the Calgary Gators, the AFL top rank team.

“It’ll be a tough matchup as our first game of the season but it will be good cause then all of our players will be able to see what this league is about and then buckle down.”

Their first home game is set for June 13 at Genesis Field against the Grande Prairie Drillers.

They have some exhibition games planned for pre-season as well and fun family events to bring out the fans.
